An uninsured motorcyclist who struck a pedestrian as she tried to cross the road has been jailed.

Patricia Keltz was hurled on to the pavement by the speeding bike driven by Kevin Hazelwood, who had never taken a driving or motorcycle test and had no licence or insurance.

Her leg, shoulder and four ribs were broken and one of her lungs was punctured in the crash outside the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

She had just got off a bus to visit the eye hospital on the opposite side of Eastern Road.

Witnesses estimated the Yamaha motorbike was travelling at 80mph or more when it overtook a car and the bus before hitting Ms Keltz.

Hazelwood, 38, of Chichester Place, Brighton, was traced after police found the damaged machine parked outside his home a short distance from the scene.

He later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving but claimed he was doing no more than 60mph when he hit Ms Keltz in November last year.

He was jailed for 18 months when he appeared at Hove Crown Court yesterday.

Hazelwood was also banned from driving for five years and ordered to take an extended test before he can drive again.

Roger Booth, prosecuting, said the victim spent several weeks in hospital being treated for her injuries and was still undergoing physiotherapy.

Hazelwood, a former security guard and chef, broke his right hand in the crash and it is heavily scarred from surgery needed to fix the bones.
