"Contains violence, swearing and traces of nuts," warn the promoters.

But what this Punch and Judy spin-off doesn't contain, strangely enough, is puppetry.

In this zany musical from the Hastings-based Dolmen Productions, the murderous little puppet and his chums will take on human form for a fantastical flight through Brighton's eventful yet rather murky past.

While Punch and Judy plots have a history of being chopped and changed to suit the issues of the day, this show aims to take on a whole half century.

What part did Mr Punch's cheap hoodlums play in The Ice-Cream Wars of the Fifties? Whose side would he be on in the infamous battle between the Mods and Rockers? Even as Brighton's Mayor, how could Punch cash in on The Summer of Love? And how could he translate his crooked business success into realising his ultimate aim of becoming a Peer of the Realm?

Joined by such characters as hangman Jack Ketch, policeman Old Nick and, of course, his long-suffering wife Judy, Punch also insists on bursting into original rock 'n' roll songs to match the appropriate decade, from doo-wap through disco to rap.

Borrowing Punch's irrepressible evil streak for a night of blackly comic drama, Punch Rocks should delight Brightonians and Rocky Horror fans. But, much like the original puppet shows, the strong language and suggested violence make this unsuitable for young children.
