Pictures doodled in 90 seconds have been put up for sale at £650 each.

Brighton University art student Marc Smith is selling his prized artwork, the squiggles he finds himself dashing off while carrying out everyday tasks.

His school exercise books were covered in doodles and he cannot have a phone conversion without scribbling away.

However, 28-year-old Marc was surprised to discover people wanted to buy his hurried pictures and put him up for a national award.

Some of his doodles are on sale for £650 and prints of his best work are being sold for £50.

One of his favourite works is called Non Stop Doodle, which was done in 90 seconds while on a bus travelling through Italy.

Another one of his pictures he called Claws after realising he had drawn a load of figures with claw-like hands.

Marc, of Bedford Place, Brighton, has been accepted for the final stages of the PizzaExpress Prospects 2004 competition, which offers a £10,000 first prize.

He said: "My doodles are created from my compulsive need to draw. Sometimes my pen does not leave the paper until a page has been completely filled. Other times, I do a quick doodle in two seconds, like it, and keep it."

Marc, who enlarges his best images using a photocopier, said: "Nobody has said my work is childish or too simplified to my face. There has been a positive response to it.

"I am a great admirer of the work of sculptor Antony Gormley, who says he likes to make use of the space the body occupies when you shut your eyes."

After travelling through Europe doing a variety of jobs, including dishwashing and working as a tour guide, he now hopes to gain teaching qualifications.
