More than 10,000 Aga cookers were sold last year as demand reached an all-time high.

Kitchen equipment group Aga Foodservice has set a new target of selling 15,000 cookers a year by 2006.

The Aga was invented in 1922 by a Swedish Nobel prize-winning physicist and has become the ultimate lifestyle accessory.

Aga, based in Birmingham, said its results for the 12 months to December 31 were satisfactory, with pre-tax profits rising 5.3 per cent to £35.9 million.

Growth in the UK was partially offset by a weak US performance. The group also became sole supplier of equipment and support services to supermarket chain Sainsbury's.
