Rosa Glading has reached her 100th year, having smoked five cigarettes a day all her life.

A party attended by Brighton and Hove Mayor Jeane Lepper and 50 guests was held to celebrate the landmark year at Dresden House.

A cake crafted in the figures 100 was baked specially for the bash at the 74-room residential care home in Albany Villas, Hove.

Ex-sociological researcher Mrs Glading lived in the same house in London for 58 years before moving to Hove in April to be near her daughter, who lives opposite.

Care manager Sadie Hill said: "Her daughter can see into her bedroom so can tell what she's up to. Rosa is very sprightly and reads the Morning Star and the Telegraph every day."
