A former councillor has quit his position in the Labour Party in a row over asylum-seekers.

Pat Murphy, who represented Wish ward on Brighton and Hove City Council until May, objected to proposals in the Queen's Speech for a tougher line on would-be refugees.

He has now quit chairing Wish and Westbourne Labour Party in protest but will remain in the party in a bid to fight for changes.

Mr Murphy said: "They are using a sledgehammer to crack a handful of nuts.

"This is a policy of forced repatriation worthy of the British National Party. They are pandering to prejudices to gather votes."
