Whenever a writer sinks to personal abuse, as does Christopher Hawtree when he refers to Councillor Sue John's contribution to the Hove Library debate as "her ranting letter" (Letters, November 25), it can only mean he is unsure about the validity of his own arguments.

The shelving issue is now acute with far too many books having to be shunted into store instead of being on the shelf.

One doesn't go to a library to admire the architecture - although I would prefer buildings to be attractive than ugly - but to browse in comfort and choose a suitable book.

As the building will remain, those with architectural concerns will not be deprived.
