Thank you, Terrence Sinnott (Letters, November 12), for your explanation for Sussex having two councils, especially when the two neighbouring counties, Kent and Hampshire, each of approximately the same size and population, manage with one each.
I suppose there is no advantage for Sussex to have one authority but assume in the days of horse and carriage that, as Sussex is twice as long as it is broad, it was a convenient thing to do.
Incidentally I have just received a postcard with just my name and road and post code, which shows it is not necessary to put Brighton or Hove.
