After two years and £6m worth of refurbishment, The Capitol is to be reopened in Horsham.

Previously called Horsham Arts Centre, the venue was closed for refurbishment in 2002.

Now the work has been completed and the impressive building boasts the refurbished Ritz cinema which now has a second screen, a theatre auditorium, a stylish caf bar, an outside mini amphitheatre and a new glass foyer.

Debbie Clare, promotions assistant at The Capitol, says the venue's impact on the community will be huge.

"The venue has always been popular but now it will really put Horsham on the map.

"The new venue is not only visually stunning, it provides greater possibilies for presenting exciting art."

The opening of the venue coincides with the beginning of the Horsham And District Arts Fanfare, a vast and diverse celebration of all forms of art, held in venues across the district.

The Capitol will be holding many of these events, showcasing all sorts of fun from stand-up comedy to opera.

Highlights include the world-famous Band Of The Grenadier Guards, who open the event tomorrow night.

Comedy fans will want a serving of Jenny Eclair, who is performing on Sunday, September 21.

Former Perrier Award winner and television performer her foul-mouthed persona should appeal to those who like cringingly accurate obsevational comedy and . . . swearing!

Also popular should be An Audience With Ann Widdecome, which is being held at The Capitol on Tuesday.

Not for the faint hearted, the eccentric politician and novelist will be sharing anecdotes with Radio Five Live presenter Iain Dale.

Also look out for battle of the bands at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre.

The Fanfare, which has been running since 1995, will provide a brilliant opening celebration for The Capitol, a venue which will provide entertainment for a large amount of people in Horsham and the surrounding area.

Its extended and renovated cinema begins showing films tonight.

Highlights include Calendar Girls and swashbuckling seafaring adventure Pirates of the Caribbean.

Actress Louise Jameson, who played Rosa Di Marco in EastEnders and is to perform in Aladdin at The Capitol from December 11 to January 4, has been to see how work is progressing.
