With reference to your article concerning my brother, myself and the noise continually affecting our bungalow in Larkfield Way (The Argus, September 3), I was surprised this should be described as a "mystery".

It is no mystery to us, for we are well aware of the cause and its origin.

The cause is a motor-propelled pump which forces the water downhill and is controlled by employees of Southern Water from either the Cuckmere Way or Ditchling Road reservoirs.

The only mystery is why the management of Southern Water deny the existence of this equipment when at a lower level their employees are instructed - by mobile telephone - to visit all the reservoirs and, by means of a console, direct the passage of the water down or up the streets and thoroughfares.

This is the origin of the noise and accompanying tremors associated therewith.

Since your article I have obtained proof from a company investigating the noise outside our bungalow of its existence.

As we have the requisite proof we have long desired, we are at last in a position to have recourse to legal measures against Southern Water.
