A man who accidentally killed his brother in a boating crash was arrested and detained for almost six hours on false suspicion of rape.

A 26-year-old woman told Sussex Police Cliff Langan, 45, had raped her last month.

He was arrested at his Neptune Court home in Brighton Marina yesterday and taken to the police custody suite at Hollingbury.

Mr Langan, who strenuously denied the allegations, was later released without charge.

He said: "This came right out of the blue. I was just having a coffee with my mum when the two police officers turned up.

"I was put on suicide watch when I was detained because of all the trauma I've been suffering. Eventually they let me go, saying there were no charges.

"It was harrowing but I dealt with it as best I could, just as I've been doing with everything over the past year."

Sussex Police said they would not be taking the matter further.

Mr Langan was arrested following the death of brother Ian on August 4 last year but no charges were pursued.

Cliff had been at the helm of a boat which accidentally speared into the side of his brother's vessel just off Brighton Marina.

Since then, he has been campaigning to raise awareness of sea safety.

An inquest into Ian Langan's death is due to take place next month.
