Property developer Josh Arghiros aims to change the face of Brighton and Hove by with a series of striking buildings in the city.

His company Karis has already submitted plans for a 16-storey tower on the Endeavour garage site in Preston Road.

It is also part of the consortium behind the proposals for the King Alfred in Hove, which involve four towers up to 38 storeys high.

Karis has now stirred up trouble in North Road, where it has a scheme for a more modest eight-storey tower and a restaurant.

There's no doubt this is an interesting proposal with a building far better than the monolithic Gresham House at the other end of the street.

But it would be at odds with the small scale of the North Laine area where most of the homes are two-storey cottages.

Even Gloucester Yard, an early development by Karis, respects the general height of the North Laine area.

Consultants are busy preparing a tall buildings policy for the city council saying which areas which will be suitable for them.

The planning committee ought to wait for the result of that before deciding whether or not to allow this intriguing tower block to be built.

North Laine has been wary of big buildings ever since the area successfully fought plans for an urban motorway 30 years ago.
