Bas Zuiderent struck a dogged unbeaten 80 as Sussex 2nd XI battled to avoid the follow on in their Championship tussle against Surrey at Hove.

Sussex, replying to Surrey's formidable 575, closed the second day of the four-day match on 269-8.

Zuiderent batted on for two hours 36 minutes and struck a six and eight fours from 139 balls. He added 88 for the fourth wicket with Australian Michael Bright, but Sussex lost five wickets for 77 runs after Bright fell to off spinner Noel Brett for 56.

Bright, who plays for Horsham, batted with Neil Turk as his runner due to a foot injury but fired six fours and four sixes off 61 balls before holing out to mid-off.

Turk and Kevin Innes shared an opening stand of 70 before Turk (45) was caught at point off James Benning, and Carl Hopkinson (3) later became the first of Brett's six victims.

Innes had reached 39 when he skied Simon Crampton to mid-wicket and Sean Heather, Chris Nash, Chris Grammar and Richard Young all went cheaply.

Nadeem Shahid earlier added 17 to his overnight 255 as Surrey, resuming on 497-5, batted on for 40 minutes. He was trapped lbw by Nash, having hit 36 fours and seven sixes.
