Albion are poised to make new goal hero Leon Knight's loan move from Chelsea permanent.

The Seagulls have agreed an undisclosed fee with the mega rich Londoners for the diminutive striker.

Knight struck twice on his home debut against former club Queens Park Rangers to clinch a 2-1 win for Albion in front of the Sky cameras at Withdean last night.

Boss Steve Coppell revealed afterwards: "We would like him to come here.

"We have been in discussions. We have agreed a deal with Chelsea, which was never a problem, and we have made an offer to Leon and his agent.

"I think we have a good chance of signing him, but it is never done until it's done."

Rangers are also rumoured to be interested in re-signing Knight, who had a loan spell at Loftus Road when they were in Division One.

"I heard about that," Coppell said.

"There has been a fair amount happening in the last couple of days.

"The good thing is Leon has been able to focus on playing football.

"His commitment is 100 per cent to this club. I know he is comfortable playing here.

"I think he has enjoyed the cameraderie in the dressing room and there is mutual respect between him and everyone at the club.

"What he needs at the moment is stability and I hope we are the team to give it to him."

Knight, also on target twice in Albion's opening day win at Oldham, said: "If money is available I would be more than happy to stay.

"We are talking and hopefully we can get everything sorted by the middle of the week."

Knight equalised with a diving header in the first half, then fired the Seagulls' second half winner after Rangers had defender Terrell Forbes sent-off for head-butting Kerry Mayo.

Coppell said: "The referee had no alternative.

"It gave us the edge, but we had been playing well before that and creating opportunities."
