The insensitivity of Roger Tilbury (Letters, August 13) made my blood boil.

I only hope his petulant challenge to a senior officer to justify the police doing their job properly goes unanswered.

I'm sure they have more important things to do than waste their time responding to his ignorance.

If I was the friend or relative of the person killed in the crash in Worthing or the person found in the sea, I would want to know everything possible had been done to establish the full circumstances.

How do the police know there was no foul play unless they are allowed to carry out a thorough investigation?

I challenge Mr Tilbury to explain to the families of these victims and the many others killed in crashes, drownings and other tragic incidents that the police investigation is "meaningless and futile".

If the small price to pay for a proper investigation is a bit of traffic delay or a few hundred yards of taped off beach for a few hours, then so be it.

I have attended many fatal incidents and crashes in a professional capacity, where the dead and seriously injured have to be dealt with.

I get the feeling that Mr Tilbury has not.
