Tycoon Sir Richard Branson will raise thousands of pounds for charity when he flings himself off Bognor pier.

But the contraption he will use to attempt human flight is being kept a closely-guarded secret.

The multi-millionaire, who is a contestant in this year's Bognor Birdman Rally, is aiming to raise more than £5,000 for Sussex charity the Chestnut Tree House Appeal.

Sir Richard said: "I have decided to take the plunge because I would love to raise enough money for the creation of a new area for play/art therapy.

"This will allow for a variety of activities, including music sessions, to aid therapy and support at the hospice."

The Virgin Atlantic chairman will be competing in the Kingfisher class for the most ingenious costume on August 31, when people don crazy outfits and try to fly as far as they can.

Sir Richard has stumped up a £25,000 prize for anyone who flies 100 metres.

The chairman of Virgin Atlantic said: "I have done many crazy things over the years but attempting flight from Bognor Pier is one of the biggest challenges.

John Stride, chairman of the International Bognor Birdman Steering Group at Arun District Council, said he was delighted about the tycoon's involvement.

He said: "We are also pleased Virgin Atlantic will be supporting this event, which increases in popularity every year."
