Meet the coolest little puppy in town - Mini Milk.

The fun-loving pup is chilling out with 12 pals at a rescue centre after they were all dumped in the summer heat.

The lucky 13 were picked up and taken to the Shoreham branch of the National Canine Defence League (NCDL), where workers immediately took a shine to them.

And because the puppies, all aged between eight and 16 weeks, arrived in one of the hottest weeks on record, they have been named after ice creams.

Now Mini Milk is sharing a pen with Solero, Feast, Raspberry Ripple, Strawberry Split, Mivvy, Zoom, Magnum, Cornetto, Neapolitan, Fab, Soft Scoop and, of course, Mr Whippy.

Nicole McCallum, of the NCDL Shoreham centre, said the little dogs had been abandoned in Wales and were transferred to Sussex because it had more room than the Bridgend branch.

She said centre manager Sharon Prior came up with the idea of naming them after lollies.

She said: "We knew the puppies were coming to us and it's hard to come up with names all the time."

Once the idea had been dreamed-up, staff at the centre, which is closed for building work, tried to match the names to the puppies' temperaments, colour and size.

A brindle puppy with black feet and a white chin was an instant Neopolitan after the tricoloured ice cream.

A black female who has struck her rescuers as being slightly nuts became Feast.

And Mini Milk - he was just little.

The puppies have all been microchipped and vaccinated and are now enjoying the sunshine, taking time to keep cool in their own paddling pools, until they are found new homes.
