Ivor Caplin feels he is able to speak for the people of Iraq and decide what would be in their best interests (Letters, July 26).

He has absolutely no right to speak for them nor, indeed, for this country whose best interests he and his Government somehow felt they were serving when they took us into this brutal and costly war.

The war we have become embroiled in at the service of a foreign power. The war that will drag on and on and will cost many more lives.

The war that was so opposed by the people of this country that the only way it could be sanctioned by Parliament and the people was by misinformation and subterfuge.

The people of Iraq do not have the power to remove British politicians who claim to know what's best for them. However, in this country, this power will be exercised in force in the next election.
