Guy Fleming, from Worthing, (Letters, June 18) appears to have, or is not interested in having, a very limited knowledge of the history of Great Britain.
This is evident in the way he criticises the British monarchy, in particular his callous and vindictive remarks about our Queen and Prince Philip.
I would remind him both the Queen and the Prince served in the British Armed Forces during the 1939-45 war and, far from being doddery, the Queen is still serving the country she loves very well.
One only has to look at countries like Zimbabwe, Rwanda, The Congo etc to see the results of republicanism, ie corruption, poverty and human rights abuse.
There is nothing to stop Mr Fleming and his fellow anti-monarchists going to live in a republic such as one of those but he should realise he would not have the same freedom of speech he enjoys here to voice his narrow opinions about two senior citizens who cannot answer back.
If living under a monarchy is so bad, why have people the world over flocked to our shores to enjoy and enrich our multi-cultured society?
I think it is because they know they will be treated humanely and fairly as a direct result of hundreds of years of our being a monarchy and not a dictatorship.
