A crucial unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 46 between Barry Hyam and Arfam Akram condemned Sussex II to their second successive one-day trophy defeat against Essex.
The pair came together with Essex, chasing a target of 208, struggling on 162-6.
Hyam (58 not out) and Akram (18) guided their side home with 15 balls to spare in a match reduced to 45 overs aside at Old Brentwood.
Tony Cottey made the most headway for Sussex, who were put in, by stroking 54 off 85 balls before being run out.
