It is unfortunate Ivor Caplin, in his march towards power, has been unable to influence the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) and bring to an end, on a reasonable timescale, the use of the earsplitting horns fitted to the new generation of trains (The Argus, June 17).
The rejection of Mr Caplin's proposal for a three-month deadline to resolve the problem, and what can only be described as a complacent statement by the RSSB's policy and standards directive, demonstrates a remarkable lack of public accountability.
In this instance, local communities living near the rail network are subjected to excessive noise pollution that starts early in the morning and continues at regular intervals throughout the day.
Unfortunately, given the apparent mindset of the RSSB, this absurd and distressing situation is likely to continue for some time.
