A champion frisbee player from Eastbourne is setting his sights on national glory this week.

Sam Webber, 20, from Eastbourne, is hoping to land a place in the British squad when he takes part in the British Open Ultimate Frisbee Championships at the Eastbourne Sports Park from Friday to Sunday.

Sam, who trains for more than 20 hours a week and can throw the disc the length of a rugby pitch, has been described by event organisers as a "phenomenon".

The championship attracts 400 athletes from Canada, America, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France and Britain.

Seven players form a team and compete with the opposing side to get the frisbee into an end zone.

The British squad has had a successful year, notching up wins at the World Ultimate Frisbee Cup in Hawaii last year.

Sam hopes to go on to represent Great Britain at the European championships in France in August.

Spectators can watch the event free of charge between 9am and 6pm each day, culminating in the final on Sunday at 3pm.

Sam, a former Cavendish School pupil, visits the town often, though he lives in Streatham.

He said: "My family are from here, my mum lives in East Dean and my dad lives in Lewes. I got into the sport because of my dad. I remember watching him when I was seven. I've been throwing a frisbee since then really."

In between studying for a degree in civil engineering at Kingston University, Sam trains with his club in Clapham.
