Bus chiefs are giving the long arm of the law a helping hand by providing them with free rides throughout Sussex.

Sussex police officers and Special Constables will only have to produce their warrant cards to secure free bus travel through East and West Sussex, on or off duty.

Traffic wardens and community support officers can also travel free of charge when on duty and in full uniform.

Officers who take advantage of the scheme will agree to make themselves available to deal with any anti-social behaviour on the vehicle.

The scheme is being extended after being launched by Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company earlier this year.

Companies joining the scheme include Stagecoach South East, Eastbourne Buses in East Sussex, Compass Travel in West Sussex, RDH Bus Services in Mid Sussex and Metrobus in Crawley.

Gatwick Express trains will also grant concessions to police officers stationed at Gatwick, on or off duty.

Chief Superintendent Andy Bliss, Head of Personnel and Training, said: "We are delighted to be able to extend the scheme as a gesture of support for our staff and as a positive step in tackling crime and disorder on our public transport system across the Force area."

Andrew Dyer, managing director for Stagecoach South East, said: "While it is hard to measure the deterrent value to potential troublemakers, passengers have already remarked favourably to drivers regarding the common sense scheme."
