As a member of Stanley Deason High School in the Eighties (or Comart, as it is currently known), I have always read articles regarding the school and felt slightly defensive of negative criticism it has received.
I have to agree with comments from P Baines (Letters, June 3) about the shameful way the Local Education Authority (LEA) has treated this community.
The new headteacher Mark Whitby has no experience of teaching secondary children, by his own admission, and the school will make a decision regarding its closure over the next 18 months. But what of the pupils?
I am incensed the LEA will allocate this school to pupils who have not chosen to go there but, because they do not fit a certain criteria i.e. do not live within a 1.5mile radius of their chosen school, they are not likely to receive a choice as the majority of schools are filled with their first-choice preferences.
I am a decent, working member of the community and I and my son have been treated worse than shabbily.
My son deserves a performing school and I, as a taxpayer, expect nothing less.
I totally agree with P Baines' call for the resignation of Councillor Pat Hawkes, and the director of education.
