During the skating boom, I was a keen skater but in those days there was no competition from blading, skateboarding, windsurfing and dry skiing which are often more accessible and cheaper.
Over the years, skating has been in decline and the problems of Brighton's Queen's Square are a microcosm of what has been happening generally.
To build a new rink on the inaccessible site at Black Rock, when half the catchment area is sea, is pure nostalgia.
Brighton needs to support new and increasingly successful tourist attractions such as The Eden Project on Kemp Town's slopes.
Everyone is interested in gardens, viz the millions going to Cornwall.
As we know, spas are back in fashion and thousands of Brits flock to those in France and Germany each year. They are taking off in the US and Bath has invested millions in reviving its spas.
We need to support the tourist industry and employment with long-term sustainable projects and certainly not those which will create the traffic chaos we saw on May 25.
