Flames tore through the roof of a family home in Ditchling Road, Brighton, today.

Hundreds gathered to watch as the blaze raged for 40 minutes, causing thousands of pounds of damage.

The roof dramatically caved in moments after a team of firefighters left the building.

By the time the flames had been brought under control, charred beams were all that remained.

Builders working on the roof are believed to have raised the alarm at 11.15am today. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The owners are believed to have been at work in London.

A neighbour said: "I was in the shower when someone knocked on the door to tell me the house next door was on fire."

Firefighters doused the house with gallons of water as they battled to prevent the flames from spreading to adjoining homes.

The crew remained on scene clearing the furniture from the lower floors.

East Sussex fire brigade Assistant Divisional Officer Neal Robinson said: "We expect to be on scene for a good few hours."
