Sussex sprinters were in superb form at the South of England Championships at Watford.

Sussex athletes claimed five titles in the under-17s age group, including a double for Carley Wenham (Crawley).

Carley is unbeaten in 12 months over 100m and also broke her own county record in the 200m (24.19sec) when she was five metres clear of Kelly Roomes (Medway).

She also broke the Sussex under-20 record and was less than one-tenth-of a-second outside the senior best.

In the 100m, Carley had two metres in hand over Jocelyn Hopeson (Surrey) and won in 11.92sec, just outside the Sussex record.

Worthing High School sprinter Wade Bennett-Jackson broke the Sussex under-17 records in the 100m and 200m.

But he had to settle for second place in the 100m (11.79sec) behind Craig Pickering (Milton Keynes), who was two metres clear.

Bennett-Jackson snatched victory on the line in the 200m with a record 21.77sec, just two-one-hundredths-of-a-second ahead of Jamhal Alert-Khan (Shaftesbury).

In the 800m, Charlotte Browning, Chichester, who like Carley is in her first year in the age group, timed her race perfectly to win in 2min.13.02sec.

Sarah Fielding-Smith (Brighton and Hove) won the high jump with her third attempt at 1.71m.

Tom Bilham (Chichester) took the silver medal in the 1,500m (4min.04.10sec). Rob Mullett (Lewes) was fourth and was rewarded with an English Schools' Championship qualifying standard 4min.35.32sec.

Emma Ely (Horsham) won a bronze medal in the pole vault (2.30m).

Florence Ray (Brighton and Hove) was fourth with an English Schools' Championship qualifying standard 41.26sec in the 300m.

The only Sussex medallist at under-15s was Emily Goodall (Crawley).

She was second in the 800m in a standard 2min.18.58sec.

The Championships produced under-20 title successes for Sussex.

Lee Emanuel (Hastings) took the boys' 1,500m crown in 3min.55.67sec.

Simon Cooke (Chichester) claimed the discus with 48.30m.

Emma Perkins (Worthing) secured second place in the high jump with a Sussex record 1.65m.

She also set a county triple jump record of 11.61m on her debut in the event.
