The work of volunteers is being showcased in the foyer of Worthing Town Hall this week and at a stall on Montague Street market this week.

Alison Booker, manager of Worthing's Volunteer Bureau, said there were more than 300 voluntary organisations in the Worthing area.

There is a huge range of opportunities on offer, from adventure holidays with young adults to gardening and conservation work.

Groups also need book-keepers, drivers and fund-raisers.

She said: "You name it, there's a volunteer doing it."

People with specific skills are welcome but in the Worthing area there is a big demand for people to become befrienders to young people, the elderly, people with disabilities and the housebound.

Alison said: "A lot of volunteers are active retired people but many of them have disabilities or are recovering from some sort of trouble.

"They may have lost their job or a loved one, or been ill or have been in trouble with the law."

The exhibition in the town hall, Chapel Road, runs until Friday.

Copies of the vacancy list can be found in libraries, council offices, community centres and doctors' surgeries.
