A Brighton and Hove city councillor hopes the Royal Pavilion will be looking pretty in pink during Pride week in August.

Councillor Paul Elgood, leader of the Liberal Democrat group, thinks Brighton and its buildings, including the Pavilion, should be bathed in a pink glow for the Pride festival between August 3 and 10.

This is already done in many other cities throughout the world with large gay populations, including Paris, San Francisco and Sydney.

Coun Elgood is putting the idea to Brighton and Hove City Council for consideration.

He is also suggesting all public buildings fly the rainbow flag during Pride week.

Coun Elgood said: "Turning the Pavilion pink for Pride week is a great idea. It would be a strong symbol showing that we are an open and tolerant city. It would also show the support Pride has in the city.

"A pink Pavilion would reflect the large and diverse population our city has. There would be no better statement for Pride week.

"Internationally the use of coloured lighting on buildings such as the Empire State Building has had a major impact.

"It is a bold move reflective of the kind of event Pride should be. A pink Pavilion would help create interest."
