Brighton police seized more than £4,000 of cannabis in a raid on a drug den.

They also found crack cocaine and a large wad of money all stashed in a carrier bag.

More than a dozen officers wearing full body armour and carrying pepper spray battered down the door of the terraced house in Hythe Road, Hollingdean, Brighton, on Friday night shortly after 8pm.

They used a metal battering ram to force entry and then charged in carrying protective shields.

Once the house was secure other officers followed, carrying plastic evidence bags and gloves.

Officers searched the house along with a police drugs dog and found the bag stuffed with 12 fist-sized bags of cannabis.

Inspector Steve Curry, leading the raid codenamed Operation Pledge, said: "A significant quantity of Class B drugs, some crack cocaine and a large amount of money were seized so we have had a very good result.

"It's been a huge success because we achieved everything we wanted in terms of our objectives.

"We have made significant gains in our operations disrupting the supply of Class A and B drugs."

Mr Curry said there was no one at the house, which had a couple of soft toys in the front window, when they carried out the raid.

He said the house was quite neat and tidy and it appeared a room had been sublet to someone who was drug dealing.

But one person coming to the property as they carried out the search was arrested on suspicion of drug related offences and later released with a caution.

Mr Curry said: "We have identified the person we want to arrest and inquiries are now underway."

He added they had been gathering intelligence for a number of days before the raids about an increase of criminal activity in the area.

He said: "What we have seen in recent days is an increase in the number of crimes in the area and that is always indicative of an area where drugs are being supplied.

"We had our suspicions and they have been proved right.

"It will have a positive impact in reducing crime in the area. It sends a clear message that drugs will not be tolerated in the city."

The raid came the day after police seized heroin and crack cocaine with a street value of £5,000 from a flat in Regency Square, Brighton.

Six officers broke into the flat just after 6pm and executed a search warrant.

Nine people were arrested - eight for drug related offences and one for public order.
