A family doctor has been found to have told a woman to lie back and think of England when she complained sex with her husband was painful.

GP Faiz Ur Rehman, 63, humiliated two vulnerable mothers by making rude comments about their sex lives during examinations.

He advised a second patient to "think of your husband" by exercising her pelvic muscles following the birth of her son.

He was also found to have ignored the protests of two other women during internal examinations and breast checks at his surgery in Bognor Regis.

The conduct committee of the General Medical Council found his behaviour had been inconsiderate, inappropriate and unprofessional with all four patients.

It decided he had not respected his patients' wishes or dignity and had not acted in their best interests.

The committee will consider whether the GP is guilty of serious professional misconduct when it reconvenes on Thursday,.

Miss A was internally examined on several occasions at his surgery in Sudley Road between January and December 1982.

Dr Rehman objected to her husband being present during one check.

He also asked the woman to remove her bra and clothing every time he needed to listen to her heart and lungs.

The GP was found to have insisted on examining Ms B, despite her protests, in May 1996 at his Norfolk Square surgery in Aldwick Road, Bognor Regis. He then told her to "let your husband get on with it" when she complained her vagina was too sore for sex.

The committee also found he had not told pregnant Ms C why he needed to check her breasts.

Dr Rehman also ignored the protests of Ms X and even brought two women into the room during an internal examination in January 1998 without her consent.

He made inappropriate comments about her vagina being "slack" because she had not been exercising after giving birth, the committee found.

The GP was also ruled to have behaved unprofessionally and inconsiderately by being late for consultations at his surgery.

Rehman, of Marshall Avenue, Bognor Regis, denies serious professional misconduct.
