A police spokeswoman says: "DNA and fingerprint hits were up a combined 67 per cent compared to last year" (The Argus, April 29).

As we are all aware, DNA testing has also become crucial in the solving of more serious crimes such as rape and murder.

Would it not save a lot of police time and taxpayers' money if DNA and fingerprints were logged at birth?

Perhaps more people would stay on the straight and narrow if this was the case.
