Sussex clubs Brighton Mitre and GS Stella won two of the three team prizes at the Southern Counties time trials.

The 10-mile event at Oakwoodhill in Surrey resulted in a win for Epsom star Tim Stevens in 23mins 12secs while his clubmate Stephen Emmerson finished second in 23.38.

The team prize was won by Brighton Mitre who were led by third placed Stuart Fahey (23.41). Tristan Court was fifth with 23.53 and Jay Chisnall (25.49) completed the winning trio.

There were further Sussex successes with Daniel Frederick (Eastbourne Rovers) winning the first junior prize in 25.44 and Angela Nainby (East Grinstead) taking the women's event in 26.29.

The following day's 25-mile race at Loxwood was won by Hampshire's Paul Pickup (Liphook Cycles) in 57.54. Stevens was second in 58.49 to win the prize for the top individual rider over the two events. It was his fifth overall win since 1996.

Brian Molley finished third in 59.48 and Mark Sinnot was fourth in 59.54 to complete the winning Epsom team.

Storrington rider Mark Jones, fifth in 1hr 0m 11s led the GS Stella team to win the prize for the top team over the two events, supported by Steve Woodbridge and Eric Bonner.

Stevens, now fully recovered from a back operation, said: "I really enjoyed these two races. Both courses were far from easy but I like a challenge and prefer them to completely flat ones."

Sussex pair John Limpus (GS Stella) and Steve Geran (VC Bayeux) won the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 30km tandem event in 38.28.

Limpus revealed that it was Geran's last appearance for the Hastings-based Bayeux club. Limpus says: "Steve has moved to Worthing and from now on he will be riding for GS Stella."

Brighton Excelsior are promoting a Surrey League road race over the Barcombe circuit on Sunday (9.30am). Newick Scout Hut is the HQ.
