Richard W Symonds (Letters, March 12) has had a wonderful idea in suggesting the US and the UK leave the United Nations.

With the European Commission, the UN and its ancillary bodies have the dubious claim to be the largest quangos in the world.

No person can doubt the noble ideals behind the founding of the UN but, in reality, what has been achieved?

The Soviet Union, being a permanent security council member, used the organisation for its own convenience.

It did not bother to seek a mandate when it invaded Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Afghanistan.

Then, subsequent motions were subsequently vetoed. If the US left the UN, most of the organisation's finances would be lost.

Ethically, the UN would be without the two most powerful free-world members.

This would leave the stage clear for such freedom-loving nations as China, Syria, Libya, Zimbabwe and Iran.

In essence, the UN is nothing more than a toothless bulldog - merely a talking shop with little real power.
