Derrick Lee won a race against the clock to clinch a national qualifying time at the Sussex Championships at Hastings.

Lee, from Haywards Heath, was the only 16-year-old to enter his age group event in the boys' 100m butterfly.

Roared on by a 200 crowd and most of the 350 competitors, he dipped inside the 59.37sec cut off time by a quarter-of-a-second to earn his place in the ASA Youth Championships in Sheffield in July.

Championship spokesman Brian Smith said: "It was hard to push himself but Derrick did superbly with a bit of help from everyone."

Claire Manton, 15, from Brighton, added six more individual titles to her county collection this year, bringing her total to 16.

She took the open and junior 200m breaststroke and 100m individual medley crowns, plus her age group 100m freestyle and breaststroke.

Clubmate Jack Smith, 14, won the junior 200m and 400m individual medleys and his age group 200m breaststroke and 100m butterfly.

Brighton lead the overall best club race on 754 points.

Crawley (605) are second followed by St Bede's, Upper Dicker (256), Haywards Heath (223), Shiverers, Hove (214) and Bognor (201).
