A jealous ex-boyfriend caused damage costing hundreds of pounds when he took his frustration out on a row of parked cars.

Trouble flared when Jamie Farndell, 22, bumped into his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend in the Selden pub in Salvington Road, Durrington, Worthing, on November 29 last year.

Worthing Magistrates Court was told his friend, Craig McNamara, 24, of Guildford Road, Rustington, realised there could be problems and the pair went to leave.

But as they did, Farndell, a metal worker, of Limbrick Lane, Worthing, fell against the pub door, breaking a pane of glass.

Outside, as the pair made their way to the nearby Lamb Inn, Farndell damaged the wing mirrors of four parked cars.

Claire Ellis, prosecuting, said police traced the pair to the pub.

She said: "As a police officer tried to approach Mr Farndell, Mr McNamara would not get out of the way. Mr McNamara lost his balance and fell over, pulling the officer over with him."

She said the officer suffered minor injuries.

Maria Monan, defending, said McNamara, who runs his own business, had been trying to defuse the situation and the incident with the police officer had been an accident.

The court was told the pair were sorry for their actions and McNamara's brother had replaced the pane of glass that was smashed.

Farndell, who pleaded guilty to five offences of criminal damage, was sentenced to a 12-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £160 compensation and costs of £55.

McNamara, who pleaded guilty to obstructing a police officer, was sentenced to a 12-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £55 costs.
