The next phase of a revolutionary police project to save the lives of abducted children will be launched on Thursday.

More than 4,000 mobile phone users across Sussex have already agreed to be sent text messages asking for help if a child disappears.

The first phase of the Sussex Police pilot scheme Child Rescue Alert, which was the first of its kind in Europe, led radio and television companies to agree to interrupt programmes with details of a missing child or their abductor.

Police are hoping to attract even more mobile phone users to register their numbers.

East Grinstead-based Community Alerts will run the messaging system, so texts can be sent to mobiles in minutes within an areas specified by police.

Employees at Sussex Police, East and West Sussex County Council and Brighton and Hove City Council have all registered their mobiles and plans are being developed to include Neighbourhood Watch schemes and schools.

Registration can be done online at www.childrescuealert.com or by texting the word ALERTS followed by a space and then your postcode to 07786 208080.
