Voice of The Argus and an article, both headlined "Rude awakening" (The Argus, February 17), point to the loud noise made by the horns of South Central's new trains and the disruption caused to some Brighton residents.
However, both pieces fail to stress the level of sound for the train horns is regulated by Railway Safety, not South Central.
Railway Safety is responsible for setting the safety standards for the industry and we are guided by its advice on safety matters.
While South Central is sympathetic to the residents' views, we are not in a position to change the sound levels of the horns unless instructed by Railway Safety.
The comment made at the end of the Voice suggesting the company was not prepared to "find a solution to this problem" is therefore inaccurate since the issue is out of our hands.
The Voice also suggests we are being prevented from introducing more new trains due to a lack of power.
In fact, we are finalising arrangements for their introduction on the Brighton main line.
