South Portslade does not have the reputation for deprivation that afflicts the Whitehawk and Moulsecoomb estates in Brighton.

But there is no doubt that plenty of poverty can be seen behind the doors of the tightly-packed terrraced houses.

That is why it was no surprise to locals when Elm Road was named in a national newspaper as Misery Street because many people living in the road are heavily in debt.

Now residents have sprung to their area's defence because there is a good community spirit in South Portslade despite all the problems.

But the neighbourly feel of Elm Road and surrounding streets does not disguise the fact there are problems caused by debt collecting agencies harassing some people.

There are also loan sharks charging high rates of interest who prey on those who can least afford their services.

It underlines the need for those in financial trouble to seek advice whenever possible and for more controls over methods used by the agencies.
