My thanks for Karen Hoy's report on the tragic death of my grandson Matthew Shelley six years ago (The Argus, February 14).
A lot of work was put in by my daughter-in-law, the result being a change of police policy.
This meant, we thought, it would not happen again. We believe it should always be assumed life still exists and act accordingly.
The first priority is to establish life is not extinct. A policeman is not qualified to do this so medical help should be sought immediately.
The lady in the River Adur was left for half an hour before she moved. By then, it could have been too late. This should never be.
The police policy is not worth the paper it is written on. Life should not be dependent on a policeman's judgement of its existence.
We need a change in the law to prevent these tragedies ever happening again.
