Hear are our top five jazz and blues gigs for the coming week

Alan Barnes and Dave Newton, Sussex Arts Club, Brighton, January 31, 8pm.

Multi-talented, postbop all-rounder Barnes appears in the festival with a choice new octet with piano legend Newton.

Spike Wells and Malcolm Creese, Marlborough Theatre, Brighton, February 2, 7.30pm.

Between them, venerable drummer Spike and bassist Malcolm have played with Tubby Hayes, Stan Getz, Cleo Laine and Sting.

They guest on vocalist Tess Garraway's In2it night of jazz, with Joss Peach.

Guitarist with French-Algerian roots, mixing jazz, folk and celtic forms.

Ian Price, Hare and Hounds, Worthing, February 4, 8.30pm.

Extrovert tenor sax and flute from the Cubana Bop frontliner, here with the house musicians.
