At the grand old age of 91, you would have thought Mick Morris had earned the right to sit back and put his feet up.

That is exactly what he had set his sights on until his 89-year-old wife Helen decided he needed to get fit.

The grandmother-of-three nagged Mick to get up out of his chair and exercise but her pleas fell on deaf ears.

Mick, who wears a hearing aid, conveniently pretended he could not hear what she was saying as she encouraged him to limber up at home.

Determined not to be beaten, Helen signed them both up at a local fitness club where they now work out twice a week.

The couple, who live in Portland Road, Hove, are now a familiar sight to other members of nearby Abbey Court Leisure Centre.

Helen said: "Mick was just sitting around all day in front of the television and at his age that can't be good for him.

"He was a bit reluctant to come here at first but now he really enjoys the sessions and looks forward to them."

The couple's routine includes use of the treadmills, exercise bikes and weights and their work rates are increasing.

Not bad considering Helen has had both knees and a hip replaced and Mick has also had one of his knee joints replaced.

Club member James Baddams said: "They are an amazing couple and everyone here respects what they they are doing.

"I am 36 and if I am still coming to the gym to work out when I am their age I will be really pleased with myself."

Abbey Court manager Brandon Harris said: "When Mick first started coming here he could barely push the pedals on the exercise bikes around.

"Now he gets on to the machine and pedals away on his own and he really enjoys it.

"We have a member of staff with them all the time to supervise their sessions.

"They are just a wonderful example of the saying 'you're never too old to get fit'."
