Vandals dropped concrete "bombs" on to cars from the top of a multi-storey car park. Police said someone could have been killed by the prank.

The missiles smashed through the parked vehicles, causing damage costing thousands of pounds.

The 8in cubed concrete blocks plummeted 30ft from the multi-storey car park in Providence Place, off London Road, Brighton.

One driver returned to his Saab to find it wrecked. The car parked next to it, a BMW, was also severely damaged.

Police issued an urgent plea to the vandals to stop: "If these blocks had hit anyone they would have killed them."

Tony Adams, 44, said repairs to his Saab would run into thousands of pounds.

He found the wreckage after attending opera rehearsal on Friday night.

He said: "It is mindless and could have killed someone.

"I'd like to think these people checked to make sure the cars were empty first before dropping the blocks but there could have been a pet inside and they wouldn't have stood a chance."

The block smashed through the Saab windscreen, demolished the dashboard and bounced out on to the bonnet. Garage mechanics today were checking to see whether the car's engine block had been cracked.

A second block smashed the roof, windows, side panel and door of the BMW and the chassis may have been damaged.

Chief Inspector Lance Gray, north Brighton police commander, condemned the vandals.

He said: "This was extremely foolish and dangerous and it is fortunate no one was hurt."

He urged witnesses or anyone with information to contact him at Brighton police station on 0845 6070999.
