East Grinstead have not ruled out a promotion bid following a hard-earned 3-1 win at home to Peterborough Town.

Sunday's result consolidated fourth spot in National League division two and coach Ian Pattison believes there is still plenty to play for.

Bowdon appear to be running away with the title and second-placed Nottingham are five points clear of Grinstead with a game in hand.

But Pattison said: "There is a possibility the top four sides will go up. There are rumours about the expansion of leagues above.

"We don't know what is going on. It is just important for us to do as well as we can.

"I can't see us catching Bowdon but Hounslow, Havant and ourselves are very tight together and Nottingham could be caught. I really wouldn't be surprised if they were caught by one of those three teams.

"We want to finish in the top three again to be in a safe position should anything happen."

Grinstead were made to work hard by a lowly Peterborough side.

Although Grinstead had the territorial advantage in the first half, the visitors had the better chances and went ahead on 15 minutes through Gary Hales.

Matt McNeill drew Grinstead level eight minutes later but Peterborough remained a threat and home keeper Giles Dakin had to make a number of saves.

The game's turning point came with Grinstead's second goal 15 seconds before the end of the first half when Mike Holland cracked the ball home as he was pushed over in the circle.

Grinstead tired in the second half but wrapped up victory when Dom Male forced a penalty strike two minutes from time which Ben Payne dispatched.

Pattison said: "In the second half our lack of match practice showed as we became mentally and physically tired and we lost our flow.

"But we were able to reorganise our shape which meant they were less effective on the break and it was a more even battle."
