Pensioners who campaigned for road safety signs outside their flats are back on the warpath after a blunder by council workers.

Tenants at the Laburnum Grove sheltered housing flats in Hollingdean, Brighton, wanted warning signs put up to slow speeding drivers and thought they had won their battle.

But while one of the signs on Brentwood Road, which warn motorists elderly people may be crossing, has created no problems, the other on the opposite side of the road has been placed the wrong way round. This has led to residents fearing for their safety.

The complex has 59 flats for elderly people aged from 70 to 95 who called for the signs because they cross the road to reach the bus stop.

Ted Kitchen, chairman of the tenants association, said although there was a slow sign on the road and a curve warning sign, motorists still sped down Brentwood Road.

He said: "The only time they brake is when they are nearly at the bus stop to go round the corner."

He has called on the council several times since they were put up in August asking for it to be put right but nothing has been done.

Mr Kitchen said: "As soon as I saw it was up I noticed it was the wrong way round.

"The other residents are all fed up. We have brought it up at every meeting but nothing gets done about it.

"With that being a blind corner on that road, a person on a Zimmer frame trying to cross that road is putting their life in peril."

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokeswoman said: "We are looking in to the situation. If it is round the wrong way we will put it right."
