What a nice surprise to see my brother getting a mention in The Sentinel - George Goodridge, saved from HMS Prince of Wales.
I still have in my possession the telegram and I well remember the night it came because it was pouring with rain.
My mother had gone to visit my brother's wife of a few months so I had the job of opening it, then getting on my bike and going up to Brougham Road with the good news.
My brother was a wireless operator/air gunner in the Fleet Air Arm.
We thought he would be coming home on survivors' leave but, sadly, it didn't happen. He was killed while flying in Ceylon on August 24 1942.
What I cannot understand is why his name is not on the war memorial at Worthing.
He went to Sussex Road School and worked for A D Wingham, the butcher in Chapel Road, about 75 yards from the war memorial.
I would be most grateful for anything you could do.
J Elliott, Marlowe Road, Worthing
