Four people were helped to live following the tragic death of a well-liked Sussex University groundsman at just 35.

Gary Bartoszek's family asked for his organs to be donated for transplant after he died in July.

His heart was given to a 66-year-old man, a kidney and his pancreas to a 38-year-old, the other kidney to a 21-year-old and his liver to a 42-year-old man.

Gary, of Brading Road, Brighton, had worked at the university's Falmer campus for 18 years.

His life ended after a tragic accident there left him with "massive and irreversible" head injuries, an inquest jury at Hove Crown Court heard yesterday.

He was driving his tractor mower through one of the car parks on June 24, when he suddenly stood up and jumped off the moving machine after it clipped a bollard.

Mr Bartoszek hit his head on the tarmac as he fell, causing fractures to the base of his skull and bleeding and swelling to his brain.

He was rushed to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where he died on July 2.

The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

Brighton and Hove Coroner Veronica Hamilton-Deeley said there was nothing to suggest Gary had attempted to kill himself by jumping off the mower.

She said: "He was able to sustain his final act of charity by making a massive organ donation."

His mother Jeannette said: "It is a great comfort to us that he was able to help others and in a way he lives on through them."
