Rachael Ogden (Worthing) and Paul Rodgers (Crawley) chalked up runaway victories at the second Sussex Cross Country League fixture.

Ogden arrived on the scene during the summer as a virtual unknown when she was a surprise winner of the Sussex 1,500m title at Crawley.

The talented 23-year-old did her best running nearly a decade ago in Yorkshire where she won a clutch of All England Schools 800m medals before moving south.

Ogden upped the pace at Lancing Manor after 1km of the 5km course and only Crawley's Charlotte Best made any attempt to stay with her.

It was not long before Best had to let Ogden go and the Worthing runner was more than a minute clear at the finish.

Best, who is still in the under-20 age group, held on to second place with clubmate Samantha Webb, also an under-20 performer, closing rapidly.

Webb had been under pressure from Brighton and Hove veteran Julia Armstrong, who in turn fought another Crawley under-20 runner, Hayley Stanton.

Crawley were team winners from Brighton and Hove.

In the men's 8km race, Hailsham's Tom Sargant took up the early running and led the field out of the starting field. But by the time they returned to complete the first of four laps, Rodgers was in front and stayed there.

Rodgers has had an inconsistent season and not shown his true form in Surrey League races but Saturday's effort and his steady run in the recent Margate International Cross Challenge, suggests he is on the way up.

Sargant paid for setting the early pace and his clubmate Ben Warren led the chase behind Rodgers after the half-way mark with Belgrave's Tim Bayley, better known as a 400m runner, never far away.

Tim Bayley (Belgrave) came through strongly on the final sweep downhill to the finish to take the silver medal position, just under one minute behind the Crawley winner.

Ben Warren (Hailsham) was third, and the first under-20 finisher, while Brighton and Hove's Rob Shannon worked his way through the field to fourth. He was first veteran to finish.

Sargant, fourth at the first League event at Goodwood, was fifth ahead of another under-20 athlete Richard Clayton (Worthing). Brighton and Hove won the team event from Crawley
