Worthing racer Dave Longhurst was the convincing winner of the annual 'Best in Britain' championship at Wimbledon Stadium last Sunday.

Long-established crowd favourite Longhurst is giving his fans plenty to cheer about.

The results from two reversed grid heats would decide the starting positions for the final. The four time world champion bagged second place in the opening heat behind Berkshire racer and arch rival Malcolm Blackman.

In the second heat Longhurst was further back in the field but still came through to finish seventh and secure a second row start for the final.

A combination of rain and shale drifting from the speedway circuit on to the hot rod tarmac made conditions difficult in the final but Longhurst duly entertained the crowd. First he passed the front row starters to take the lead and then, in something resembling Schumacher dominance, lapped the entire field to take the title.

The Sussex man now looks forward to the forthcoming test series in South Africa where he captains the British team looking to avenge last year's narrow defeat against the Springboks.

In the Superstox racing at Wimbledon, Rotherfield's David Pyke was also competitive in a strong entry. He posted a brace of sixth place finishes in the heats and took ninth in the final.

Former British champion Geoff Bridges (Colgate) was fourth in the first heat and eighth in the next but failed to make an impression in the final.

Dave Heal was the top Sussex finisher in the second round of the British Supermoto Championship at Cadwell Park.

The Heathfield ace came eighth in the Super final, which brings together the top 16 finishers in the open class final and the top eight from the 450cc final.

Heal, a former British Superbike privateer champion, said: "It was a motocross orientated course and I didn't think it would suit me. I qualified fourth at the start of the weekend, one second behind former world motocross champion Paul Malin, so I was pretty pleased.

"I had a front row start in the Super final and I came eighth. I was pleased with that but a little annoyed as I was running fourth until two laps to go when my clutch went."

Peacehaven's Richard Freshwater came 12th in the Super final after qualifying from both the open and the 450 class finals.

Freshwater came sixth in the 450 final, having been running third at one stage, and was 14th in the open final.

Uckfield's Andy Denyer was 15th in the Super final but it was a disappointing weekend for another Uckfield rider, Sam Corke.

At the first round of the championship Corke was the top Sussex finisher but he came off twice in successive laps which meant he finished 11th in the 450 final and the did not qualify for the showpiece event of the weekend.
