Albion boss Steve Coppell is sweating on a goal-laden landmark for Bobby Zamora.

The star striker's 100th League appearance for the Seagulls against John Gregory's Derby at Withdean on Saturday is under threat from ankle and heel injuries.

Zamora hobbled through the closing stages of Monday's 1-1 draw at Wolves after lifting his tally for the club to an amazing 67 goals in 99 League games with a clinical first half finish.

"You need a sharp end and in the last couple of games he's been very much our sharp end," Coppell said. "It might be a costly result for us because he's got a sore Achilles and we're not blessed with a great deal of depth in any position.

"With an Achilles injury you are all right walking and running flat out, but anything in between is really painful.

"Bobby has got an ankle problem as well, which might be more long term than the Achilles. At the moment I would say he is 50-50 for Saturday.

"We'll just keep our fingers crossed that he recovers well. If he doesn't it's a helluva hole to try and fill."

Coppell is also concerned about Zamora's strike partner Graham Barrett, who went off in the second half at Molineux. "They've looked good every time I've seen them play together, but Graham has got a sore knee as well. The initial diagnosis was that he will be struggling for Saturday."

Recent signings Dean Blackwell (hamstring) and Simon Rodger, who hurt an ankle in training before the Wolves game, also face fitness checks when the players report back for training today. They both came off towards the end, although Rodger's withdrawal owed more to fatigue.

Zamora could be involved in an intriguing contest again with England under-21 colleague Chris Riggott after getting the better of Jolean Lescott, another of his international team-mates, against Wolves.

Saturday's tussle may also mark the return to the starting line-up of Derby's highly paid front man Fabrizio Ravanelli.

The Italian returned from an Achilles injury as a substitute in last Saturday's home defeat by leaders Portsmouth, who want to sign him.

Coppell refuses to get carried away by Albion's min-revival of four points from two games. "If you did a straw poll amongst all the managers in the division most are getting ready to just snip us off even now," he said.

"There's a long way to go, but we're certainly not going to speculate on our future. We'll shut up and get on with our jobs and let other people do any kind of speculating they like."

Albion are fearful of a fourth postponement on the trot for the reserves against Northampton at Worthing tonight. That would again deprive Coppell of the chance to see the fringe players in competitive action for the first time, plus Cameroon-born trialist Roger Pandong.
